Canberra suburbs have a lot of open spaces and pedestrian pathways. In the Woden Valley area it's usually possible to walk from any house to the local shops without having to walk alongside busy roads.

The open stormwater drains are a distinctive feature of Canberra.
One of Canberra's virtues is the many pedestrian underpasses. In most suburbs pedestrians and cyclists can use underpasses and so avoid having to cross busy roads.
